There is a distinct difference between interviewing for a management position and interviewing for a board seat. This type of leadership needs to be able to assess risk, manage crises, and partake in conversations around strategic growth. One of the most critical aspects of joining a corporate board is ensuring a good cultural fit. Serving on a board is a long-term commitment, and it’s essential to work with a group that shares your values and challenges you positively. When interviewing for a board seat here are 5 key questions to ask that will not only show you are interested and prepared but also will help you determine if the board is the right fit.
Question #1 What is the Vision, Strategy, and Plans?
During interviews, ask questions to understand the company’s mission, strategy, and internal dynamics. What is the company trying to do? To be?
Is there a well thought out and executed strategic planning process and what are the key issues facing the organization over the next several years? Is the company proactive, reactive or perhaps both?
Question #2 What are the risks the company faces and how are they dealt with?
While you should thoroughly research the company beforehand, it’s also important to ask questions about risk in your interview. These answers can shed more light on potential business, market, and financial risk. They can help you understand the company’s past responses to challenges, and grasp how it addresses these challenges.
Question #3 What is the role of the board in this organization?
Is the board Ceremonial, Liberated or Progressive board? Is there a position description? What is the current composition of the board? What is the Board relationship and interface with management like? How are differences
of opinion resolved? These are all vital questions to ask as they will help you gather a better understanding of the role you’re interviewing for and what is expected of you.
Question #4 What is the culture of the board?
The culture of a board is crucial as it impacts decision-making quality, governance, strategic alignment, crisis management, board member satisfaction, and overall company performance. A positive and effective board culture is foundational to the success and sustainability of an organization.
Question #5 Why are you interested in me as a Director?
This can shine light on what skills and expertise are they looking for from you and help you determine if your leadership and communication style is appropriate for them.
Boards seek candidates who fit well with the team, demonstrating experience, skills, and the ability to contribute constructively. Avoid coming across as arrogant or a know-it-all; instead, be yourself and confidently share your insights.
By asking these five questions, aspiring board members can navigate the complex interview process and secure a position that aligns with their skills and values, contributing meaningfully to the company’s success.
